day15 - music and memories

tonight's song

dear luci,

tonight i feel at peace, but also slightly uneasy, as if something could topple my relative stability like a jenga tower.

it's one of those nights where I wish I was out wandering. i can see myself weaving a path under streetlights, listening to music over my headphones. sometimes I listen to music for strategic reasons, not just for Input, but in the hopes that a memory will crystallize alongside a particular track or album. I can revisit them and instantly transport myself back to whichever moment I've associated it with. Sometimes this will happen completely accidentally. A certain song will just happen to be playing while I'm living a formative memory. This is also why I associate a lot of music with driving down various roads.

Some examples:

'Elton' by Last Dinosaurs > Walking to the bus station in Nara to meet a friend-of-a-friend.

'Birds of Tokyo' by Birds of Tokyo > The CD my mum had in her car on repeat for what felt like years when I was around 11. I know most, if not all the words to every song.

'How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful' by Florence + The Machine > Driving to and from Melbourne with my friend Ben and our mums, so we could perform stand-up comedy in the state-finals of a competition. He introduced me to the album, and would whisper-sing along because it was out of his vocal range, but he clearly felt each song deep in his soul.

'Of The Night' by Bastille > Playing it on a loop on my netbook in Grade 6 because I wanted to learn every single word. Everyone else was on school camp, but I stayed back because I got terribly homesick. I had to do some workbook while in one of the Prep classrooms.

'Black Dog' by Led Zeppelin > Watching my friend Kane perform in a band for Year 12 music. It was an open show for some kind of occasion, played in the courtyard for everyone to enjoy. My friend Josh was grooving along and I remember his mass of curly hair flying back and forth as he bobbed his head to the rhythm.

Hidden Track:

'Run Away With Me' by Carly Rae Jepsen > I won't tell the story. She'll read this and remember ;)

Those are a few stories I felt like sharing. They're not the most recent nor necessarily the most potent memories, God knows I thought of at least five others that I'd just like to keep between me, whomever else, and the universe. In any case, I hope you enjoyed that little trip down memory lane. It's far more pleasant than last night's (decidedly bizarre) entry— and no, this isn't an apology for that.

Here's to more memories, more songs, more chances to share little fragments of my soul with those I love.

Sweet dreams, Luci.
