s02e18 - serial(ized) experiments

you remember how when you were younger, you used to eagerly await new episodes of your favourite show. you would ensure your commitments were handled, dinner eaten etc, so you could hole up in your bedroom for an hour, most Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. you would snuggle up to watch new episodes of doctor who on your boxy CRT as they premiered in your timezone. it made you feel a peace with the end of the weekend.

free to air tv is kind of dead, and there's not much that can bring you that kind of excitement anymore.

that's not entirely true, there's one thing…

then go on, tell them about it.

could you?

she has something to share with you, but she wants me to tell it. do you mind if I switch perspectives?

lately she has fallen in love with the notifications from her RSS feeder app.

the alerts are far from instant, on the contrary, the feeds sync at their own whims, notifying her of entries published several hours or days ago.

opening the app, she reads the post titles and their authors. it makes her feel like she's opening a letter and scanning the bottom of the page for the sender's name.

she has four favourite blogs. to read their names above a new post fills her with delight, a giddiness so rarely felt nowadays.

they belong to her best friends. and the instant she can, she devours every word.

as a child, she was insatiable. when she developed a new interest, she wanted to know everything about it. through adulthood though she realised she couldn't know everything about her interests. it wasn't practical— so she backed off on that a little.

she devours every word because she loves them, and she knows how one blog post can plumb the depths of your soul. what's more, she is in love with the way they express themselves. it is all so beautiful, so elegant, so blunt, so varied. she is thankful for a rare glimpse into their interiority. it's like inviting a friend over when you know your house is messy— and knowing they won't care.

so yes. her favourite new newsletters. her most cherished intangible spaces. unflinching. unapologetic. unscheduled and unexpected. they are her new favourite shows.

how did I do?

good, I think. but you did kind of make me sound like a freak

in my defence, you are a bit of a freak.

touché.

they know that already, though

yup. but they still stick around.

obviously.
